Step 1 — The River Ride In

This stretch is half the pleasure: jade-green water, limestone karst peaks rising on either side, and a slideshow of riverside life — farmers in the paddies, water buffalo on the banks, children fishing. Step 2 — Gliding Into the Cave

At the cave mouth the boat passes under a low rock canopy — the roof can hang just a few metres above your head — and slips into the dim interior. Step 4 — Back Out

You return the way you came: a short walk back to the boat, then the 30-minute glide downriver to the station. How Hard Is It?

Easy, for the most part. The boat ride is seated, and the walk inside Phong Nha is flat — manageable for most ages and fitness levels. Two things to note: the cave sand and any wet rock can be slippery, so wear shoes with grip; and if your itinerary includes Paradise Cave, that one adds a climb and a long staircase, so it’s the more demanding half of the day.
